The pygmy hog is the smallest and rarest wild pig in the world. It is critically endangered, with an estimated population of 150.
The pygmy hog inhabits the grasslands of Assam, in Northern India. These grasslands are harvested annually for thatching grasses, and are deliberately burned 1-2 times per year, to make room for development and agriculture. This greatly reduces the floral and faunal diversity the pygmy hog relies on.
